Feasibility study to transform the old heating system and integrate it in a centralised system while dealing with the complexity of a site with listed buildings

 

An old heating system in listed buildings

A educational establishment in Ireland occupied a large site with a number of listed buildings that were developed in the late 18th century. The buildings were heated by two large 40 year old steam boilers and 4-5 heat exchangers. There were no heating controls on the system. Low pressure hot water was delivered through an underground distribution heating system composed of old steel pipework. They tendered for a feasibility study to review the system to present options and costs to transform the heating system.

 

A detailed feasibility study in an environment with constraints

Following the formal tendering process, Malone Group was selected to develop the feasibility report and provide recommendations. Working through the feasibility study we analysed the different heating requirements of the different facilities onsite. The campus included a mix of educational buildings/facilities and residential buildings for students. As a result, the shift in requirements between day and night load was considered. Further considerations included the cost and complexity of working on listed buildings while maintaining the aesthetics of buildings that were over 200 years old. This inevitably pushed up costs and introduced construction issues that needed to be addressed.

 

Based on our findings, we advised the customer to consider the centralised heating system option, with decentralised control systems within each building as an efficient solution. The feasibility study suggested timelines for the project with a phased approach over 2 to 3 years to complete the full transformation project.

 

Transformation with minimal disruption

The level of detail in the feasibility design work allowed the customer to plan the transformation fo the heating system while minimising the disruption to normal day to day running of the educational campus during the project.
